The average American household has 1.8 drivers but owns 1.9 vehicles, according to the U.S. Dept. of Transportation's (DOT) just-released 2001 National Household Travel Survey. The DOT report says 8 percent of U.S. households have no car at all - about the same proportion as in 1995. Not surprisingly, households in cities are twice as likely to have no car as those in rural areas. By type, 57 percent of America's vehicles are cars or station wagons, 18 percent are pickup trucks, 12 percent are SUVs and 9 percent are minivans. Motorcycles, RVs and other vehicles account for the remainder. Results also show Americans traveled about 4 trillion miles by car in 2001, or an average of 14,500 miles per person.
